Since launch in April, Southbound has been free. On September 15, 2026, that changes: the app becomes a paid subscription — $249.99 per year, with a 14-day free trial for eligible subscribers.

But there’s one exception, and it’s permanent.

Install before September 15 and it’s free for life

Everyone who installs Southbound before September 15 becomes a Founding Member: every feature, free, forever. Not a free year. Not a discount. Free for life.

No signup, no code, no credit card. The original App Store download must precede September 15, 2026, at midnight Eastern — and when the paywall arrives for everyone else, you’ll see a thank-you instead.

This is our way of being honest about how products get built: the people who trusted an unknown app with something as important as their tax residency record did us a favor. Favors get returned.

Why paid, and why $249.99

Southbound tracks something with six figures at stake. A snowbird leaving New York or California is protecting tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in state taxes, and the thing that protects them in an audit is a contemporaneous, GPS-backed record of where they actually were — the record Southbound keeps automatically, in your own iCloud, all year.

Tools that guard that kind of money shouldn’t be free, and free tools have a way of not being around in three years when the audit letter shows up. $249.99 a year is less than a single hour with a tax attorney. It keeps Southbound independent, private (your location history never touches our servers — we couldn’t sell it if we wanted to), and here for the long haul.

What the subscription includes

Everything. There are no tiers:

  • Passive, battery-friendly day tracking with the Departure Budget — one number that tells you how many days you can still spend outside Florida
  • CSV export, with formatted PDF reports coming in version 1.2. Reports distinguish self-reported days; a report hash does not prove the history was never edited.
  • GPS evidence export — every coordinate and timestamp, yours
  • CloudKit sync to your personal iCloud. No accounts. No Southbound servers.

What you should do

If you’ve been meaning to try Southbound: install it this week. It costs nothing, it starts your record today, and it locks in free-for-life before the window closes.

If you’re already tracking with us — you’re in. Nothing changes on September 15 except a thank-you card.
